Accra Crime Alert – The Case for DIY?

When a domestic doodad breaks down, and you allow in wandering workmen to repair, they may not only come calling; they may also come casing! The Police says the risk runs even with imposters invested in utility company coveralls. Since security-check results are a Haley’s Comet, maybe this is a case for DIY, in the City of Accra, no?

  1. This is a problem all over the place, NY.
Over here nobody allows anybody on their property without a firm knowledge of who they are.
The Christians, for example, only get members from their churches to come do work on domestic appliances. Those from other religions do the same.
People have picked repairmen, painters, gardeners etc; from the street and got their houses totally cleaned out and even attacked.
Even some of the guys who come to install DSTV and other home appliances have been caught breaking into some of the houses they have worked on.
So yes, everybody must learn the DIY basics.
    It could save your life.

Yes,DIY if you can! Considering the non-existent address system, it would be especially difficult to check the bona fides of a person in Gh, unless he/she is recommended by a trusted person. So if you cann't DIY, like me, pick people from the church or leave the house. lol!

  3. @ Posekyere: It's a good idea to engage workmen you somewhat know. No, it's brilliant. But, from recent (Ghanaian) experiences, I say it's no comfort or guard-dropper to say "hire him, he is in the same church as you". You may easier bring the robbers in that way.

@ Kwame Mensa-Bonsu: Lol. What did you mean by leave the house? Just abandon it? What if it's yours and for a landlord/lady?
