victims? errmmm... no! the fact that blue-collared workers get busted more for a crime that is more pervasive than we're led to believe, doens't make them victims... it just points to a problem with our law enforcing agency and legal system (perhaps socio-cultural values too).
They are all largely poorly-educated and without contacts in higher places! That is the common denominator. Have you heard of professors, teachers, HR officers, etc being arrested?
I agree with you Kwame. The professors, teachers, HR Officers, etc who get caught 'settle matters' with the family, then everyone is hush, hush about it. It doesn't help anyone.
Victims.. The only victims are the children they destroy and the families of those children. Oh let’s not forget the future spouses, that have to deal with the emotional and mental toll (baggage’s) the abuse left behind.
If you are rich the women (children) would come to you. No need to force them. And when you force one the family would more likely to settle with a hefty compensation. lol. As for the pastors people are just fed-up with their hypocrisy and would rather name to shame than accept their coins.
@Nana Yaw Asiedu, Pastors, victims themselves? i'd love to think so, but i guess it is high time they got "busted" for this sort of thing. We are tired of their pretentious nature (some of them) and their use of religion as a cloak to shield themselves after their numerous escapades heavily centred around what we call an indecent assault
@ yeh:I won't argue against the logic in your comment.
@ Kwame Mensa-Bonsu:Good point. Let me tell you an experience I had in court once. A man had been charged with defilement (sex with a minor). The judge was unfair to him. He may well have committed the offence, but he stood no chance in defending himself against a prejudiced judge. It was my 2nd year as a lawyer, and I was with my senior on another matter. This accused person was a 42-year-old block layer. He was tried and convicted and sentenced for 10 big ones in about 20 minutes!
@ Tetekai:In fact, we have found out that in many instances where people are accused of having sex with a minor (whether the minor is 6 months old or 16 years old) the family usually asks for some large compensation. It is after the accused is unable to cough up the money that the family reports the matter to the police. Maybe it only means people here will usually be willing to cash in on the calamity. But it could also mean that some of the accusations are lies - easy money schemes by poor people to make money off others. I don't know.
@ pearlsa:Not deliberately wanting to sound controversial, we have seen instances in all nations where women have been used by professional or political opponents to destroy people's careers. I am not saying these people are innocent (in fact, from my experience, they are usually not innocent). What I am saying is some may be victims of cruel lies.
@ Nana Fredua-Agyeman:Ah, so you believe that in most cases of sex with a minor, the minor or their parent would have pushed the minor to 'play' with the man with an eye on compensation of a sort? That's complex.
@ fafaq:Yes. We must remove the discriminatory protective clothes from all people who commit offences - pastors, priests, politicians, professors, lawyers, judges, soldiers, gravediggers, girlfriends of ministers of state, etc etc ;-)
