Two Man-Parents

Jo kisses his son’s little head, amazed, riveted by his penetrating questions. In a weird-but-wonderful way, such waltzing wittiness reminds Jo of his magnificent Kwame. On that touching, tender thought, Kwame floats down the stairs and sails across the living room floor to Jo. Kwame gives Jo a caress on the lips, and involves their son in a long, warm hug. Suddenly, Jo wakes up; it was a taunting dream, and Kwame is still fast asleep beside him. Jo sits up on the bed. He has woken up still in Ghana; there is no child! He and his Kwame cannot adopt.

  1. Hmm...a serious topic you are broaching. I won't be around when the bees start to sting.

In one of my facebook updates I asked the very thing you are talking about here: Should gays be allowed to adopt children, since children are the natural product of a marriage between a man and a woman? I have the belief (call be conservative or colloquial or whatever derogatory name there is) that they should not be allowed to. Why prepare a food you cannot eat?

  2. I think they should be allowed, so many needy children out wanting stable families. Can the guys provide this must be the question not their sexuality.

  5. Blame it on section 104 of Act 29. I'm developing a paper for its possible future amendment. Its gon shock my pastor when it is published. But I'll revel in the repeal of section 104. Don't get me wrong. I'm very straight!

  6. Don't worry about me, NFA, a writer has to put bold questions out there sometimes.

  7. Myne, I admire your ability to simply ignore all those 'moralistic' surrounding issues.

  13. Well, well, well what can i say, rights should be enjoyed by all and that includes adoption, why then should they be denied.

  14. lol@ Mike!...hmmm... don't know what to really think. Or maybe I don't really want my opinion to be known but I don't think anyone should be denied the right to happiness. That does not however mean that same sex relationships should be forced down anyones throat. I feel like the whole world is going gay now!... and in Ghana, I realized, the more Western influence, the higher the rate of different sexual orientation. I stand to be corrected though...

  15. @Maxine...if someone enjoy stealing should he be allowed? I am not equating same sex with stealing but the premise of allowing people to do what they enjoy doing is wrong to start with. There are psychopaths who kill for fun.

if i should have a child who becomes gay I would have him eliminated. I swear. Call me a fanatic or anything you want but I won't stooge for 'abnormal' things to be shoved down by throat. The fact that it is being done doesn't make it right.

In some Asian countries, they boil their animals alive and feed on it. Some prepare the animal for food whilst still alive and some feed on infants. Should we copy it because some people are doing it?

I AM TOTALLY AGAINST SAME-SEX MARRIAGE. Note I am not religious...hence this has no religious sentiments. It is the absurdity and abnormality of it which our so-called 'civilisation' is normalising. I call it devolution. Before long we would be parading ourselves naked on the streets and would be eating ourselves up (becoming cannibals) because our civilisation would normalise it. This stem-cell research and the development of embryos to harvest body parts have already started.

  16. NY, wonderful prose!

Nana, I think the rule you are sketching is not "do whatever you want", but "do whatever you want AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T HURT THE PEOPLE INVOLVED". Same-sex marriages should of course be dependent on the individuals free will to enter. Just like opposite-sex marriages.

Marriage is and should be between a man and a woman. Same sex couples can cohabit andcall it whatever they want to call it. As for adoption, you cann't have it all in life. Otherwise i'll be a billionaire! There are loads of male-female marriage partners ready to adopt if the laws allowed it. In England it is easier for gay couples to adopt than straight couples. That should never happen in Ghana. No gay adoption in Ghana. Period! Sometimes one needs to draw a firm line in the sand to so-called "civilising" practices. We have enough problems as it is.

  18. @ Kwame Mensa-Bonsu and Nana Fredua-Agyeman:
It seems to me that you are only saying that sodomy offends your sense of morality (I did not say religiousity, if there's a word like that). Your arguments unhappily reduce the issue to a preference of moral standards, which begs the question as to whose morality should prevail - that of the Catholic, the Muslim, or the man on the Madina trotro?

  19. Finally I can comment! I don't know how it happened but I feel liberated. Like I said earlier Nana Yaw, you have opened a bottomless can of worms!

Just wondering, does being in a straight couple union necessarily by default make you a good parent?
I would hope that parenting has more to do with providing for your children needs in terms of having a loving stable home environment, providing financially as well as instilling good values.

It would be naive of me not to acknowledge that for same-sex couple trying to raise children within a society that finds gay unions morally repugnant would be a real challenge and perhaps a strain.

@Nana F-A: *LOL* You don't see any irony in advocating death for your own children? That does not sound like ideal parenting!!! What happened to unconditional love that comes with being a parent?

@Kwame Mensa-Bonsu: I had no idea that "In England it is easier for gay couples to adopt than straight couples". After the recent tragic deaths of a number of children such as Baby P all under the care of straight couples then maybe it is actually a good thing!

@Abena: those guys in the Baby P case were sick, out on the fringes of society kind of people. If the laws haven't been tied up in knots in England, the kid would have been taken away from them.@ Kissi, very controversially, i believe in stable two, male-female parent families. For me it is not morality, it is commonsense normality and should remain so. If in Europe, they want that, let it stay there, thank you very much!

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ Kwame Mensa-Bonsu: Well said. Yet, it still seems to me that what you call commonsense normality is a function of subscribed morality. A concept is normal to one because it sits well with one's preferred way of doing things. And choice is fundamentally borne of morality. You may call it whatever - but it is morality, pure and simple. If you find the practice to be uncommonsense abnormal, it is because it does not conform to your preferred "approach" - preferred "choice" - moral subscription. However, that is not to suggest that there may not be general grounds of morality.

Again controversially, if we quietly accept that single parent and unstable two parent families cause a vast majority of society's ills, then it follows that unbalanced same-sex parent families will just excarcebate it. I say let us leave European civilisation where it belongs.I've been here long enough to know the difference. And for me it is commonsense.
