Obama in Ghana - A View from Ghana

At a football game, Americans celebrate each TOUCH DOWN, and, then, they go home to the bills they still have to pay.

In each of the last three US presidencies, the Air Force One has TOUCHed DOWN at, and lifted off from, the little airport in Accra.

Life goes on!

  1. We must want more from these, our colleagues, we must demand that they just do not pat us on the back, but rather enter into meaningful economic pacts!

  6. Naa, there'll be no cake, even, from this presidential visit. Just words (which have their own place, anyway). Then life goes on! Let's see this for what it is - recognition, example-setting and encouragement!

  8. *LOL* Very Witty piece. It captures the bleak, cold reality of trips to Africa by US president. Yet, this trip is clearly different. Obama symbolizes so much...he embodies the notion that a Black man is capable of being president of the world.

  9. Well, Abena, I think that, more than the bleak, cold reality ..., it just rouses us to the realisation that we are in charge of our own destination and development.

  10. they touch down, tour and leave and we continue to live like before. the before and after impact is zero. the talkshop won't help anyone. the solution to our problems is in us....

  11. The solution, yes sir, is in us!

  12. I'm still trying to get the real reason behind the excitement.

Is it because he chose to come to Ghana first as his first official trip to Africa? Would the reception be different if Joe Biden or another typical WASP was president?

Is it because he is the first African American president?

Is it because yet another sitting US president is coming to Ghana?

Is it because people think he can save us from our troubles?

Is it because the whole family is tagging along? (This was news to me btw- I think grandma is coming too)

And what the hell is this I'm hearing about disgruntled Nigerians?

  13. Maybe he's a hero to a lot of people?? Yeah, that could be it.

  14. Obama is not just another American President. He is half a blackman, whose wife is fully black and a descendant of people we sold or were stolen or captured forcefully, packed like sardines in those horrible castles and shipped away. This is home coming. We must celebrate a 400 year plus return of family we once lost. Or are we too busy trying to survive to notice?

I hope the Ashanti and Fante chiefs will go and apologize to the first family for their various roles in that holocaust... or is it another matter?

  15. @Nana Kofi Acquah,
you are right Obama is not just another American prez.

but same way no American prez was just another one. they were all unique in their own unique ways! that personality uniqueness aside is the all well know American foreign interests!

it's up to Obama to prove that he won't follow just blindly! else he's just another of them in that sense just like all the others who held up American interests no matter what damages the made others suffer!

I will celebrate Obama for what he stands for, not for him being black or white or green or first or second or 'husband' to a slave descendant! no!

talking about slavery! yes all who were involved must apologise! the blacks and the whites! and Obama too must apologize for leading a nation that once enslaved people to help them build their so called prosperity! but would Obama? would he when he insists that Americans today must not apologize for the way they live(inaugural speech)???

let whoever wants to celebrate go ahead. and let whoever wants to feel bad go ahead. these are all emotions and don't mean much! you may cry, you may laugh! no big deal!!!

after the tears though, and after the laughter must come sense!

    cheers!

  16. Yes, Raine, it is probably because he is a hero to millions. Interestingly, he gave the exact message that Nana F and I thought would be the essence of the visit - we are in charge of our own destiny!

  17. I am not sure that I am in total understanding of (and agreement with) what you say, Nana Kofi, but I respect it.
