Browning the Home Team

My street neighbour was soaring to a grand house in a more genteel geography, and wanted a titled tenant for her old cabin. I revealed my best friend’s stress for a new address, and she said she would be in touch. But I saw her take sides with the ‘Away’ team, and put in an Indian couple instead.

  1. Ha! Why does this not shock me at all? Too many times have I seen little instances of 'racism' against our own kind. And then dear Madam Browner will go to 'America-Toronto' and wonder why the apartment she asked for first went to the less financially capable caucasian family. Ah, this woman paa!

  2. Yes, it happens all too often. Had the duty of sorting out a situation (in my profession) once, when a group of Greeks (no particular offence meant) left a poor woman's house like a pigsty when they were leaving. Hmm

  4. Mmmm very tricky one...At first I was appalled at your street neighbour clearly browning the home team in favour of the away team especially since you could probably vouch for your friend as an asset to the team...and as the saying goes..."Show me your friends and I will show you your character"..but then I thought about it. The neighbour is clearly suspicious/wary of people on her team perhaps from bad past experiences or prejudices..losing too many games maybe? She feels safer opting for an away team than going for what she knows/thinks she knows..Or maybe she simply wanted to jack up the prices to expatriate rates?!

  5. You're right, Aby, there could be any number of reasons. But I believe we were gazumped.

  6. this doesn't shock me...perhaps they paid more but we are prone to favour the away team than the home team...it is us...who we are...this has overtones of your last post 'painting for Obama in the city of Accra'.

  7. Perhaps, Nana F. And I agree with that about similar overtones to 'Painting for Obama in the City of Accra'.
