Death by Hanging in the City of Accra

Prisoners spend long, lazy, luxuriant hours in the plentiful sun of Nsawam Prisons. I have heard it said that killing is barbaric in all cases. Thus, Ghana must be barbaric for keeping the death penalty. In truth, nobody has been executed in almost 20 years. So murderers and other insanely-wicked criminals know they will be sentenced to death, but bask in the tropical soleil until old age strangles them. In 2 cases, convicted murderers have even been released on a presidential pardon.

  1. On presidential pardon?? Not to protest or anything but is that safe???

  2. Is luxuriant really the correct word to describe Ghana's prisons? That doesn't really gel with the way I've heard you describe them before...

  3. Didi, the presidential pardon is 'safe'. I think there is a whole committee that reviews cases and recommends pardoning or otherwise to the prez.

  4. Think-About-It, do you think it's impressive? How so?

  5. Fiona, 'luxuriant' most certainly not the correct word. I was voicing the school of though (without criticism) which believes that keeping people on death row for a long time is a luxury, and that we must executed them asap.

    Prison is hell on earth.
