No! We don't want to frighten visitors away, and almost everybody will go with hair unharmed while pacing through dark, dark, Accra. But half a dozen policemen were just jailed for rogue-robbing a businessman in his hapless hotel room. So, last night, at 9 p.m., I slackened speed to give two cops a ride up the Spintex Road. But, wanting to arrive safe and sound, I changed my mind and simply sped off.
Ha ha ha ha
ReplyDeleteLike the good old saying: Better safe than sorry, right?
yes, raine. and the people you don't expect to hurt you are the one's who hurt the most when they strike.
ReplyDeleteThe absolutely right thing to do. I was mugged in 2005 since my friend and I gave a young man walking near us the benefit of the doubt. Have really learned since then; trust NO ONE!
ReplyDeleteawww sorry, abena serwaa. mugged in what country?
ReplyDeleteNYA, you're totally right. Policemen in Nigeria have often been caught as robbers. Irony right?
ReplyDeletemyne, i agree, ironic. but no more so than the cops and soldiers who 'rent' out their guns to armed robbers.
ReplyDeleteDidn't want to say but twas in GH..
ReplyDeleteBTW; I heard that some police in South Africa were also supplementing their incomes by taking part in armed robberies with work-issued weapons.
well, abena, serwaa, the truth must be told, no? you were mugged in your car? did he like use a knife or something like that?
ReplyDeleteit appears the police in some south american cities do even worse.
Well, no..my friend Renee and I were walking in an isolated area of Legon campus around 6pm and we assumed the guy walking near us was a student. As soon as the last car passed, he pounced on me punching me all over! He was trying to grab my messenger bag. It happened so fast so could not even react. He got away with my bag. Maybe he was after a mobile but that was in my pocket. The thing he got away with that still bugs me the most was my father's wallet. Not for the contents but the sentimental value.
ReplyDeleteAww NY this post is heart-breaking. I think more than 50% of our police are hardworking good men and women; and they deserve the little favours. Yes the bad nuts have a way of making everyone else look bad but we can't let evil reign.
ReplyDeleteI must quickly add here that it is good to trust your instincts. If you didn't feel right about giving them the lift, then it is good you didn't.
We really missed you last night at the Smoothies Expressions event.
Low pay, lack of proper background checks before recruiting, lack of monitoring. Hope we get there eventually. But then the police are part of the society and so do reflect the society. We should also look at ourselves.
