Women in Ghana used to stay...in bad abusive relationships; much more than men. Now, it’s difficult to say who’s more likely to move on when the shit hits the fan. This week, we will explore the high divorce rate (especially among marriages under 5 years) and some of the more bizarre causes I have bumped into.
Look forward to it. DV is a no no for me
ReplyDeleteFascinating stuff. But pray tell, what is the divorce rate in Ghana? And what is the rate for marriages under 5 years?
ReplyDeleteSeems increasing modernity is putting pressure on marriages.Look forward to the causes! Guess money and sex or the lack of them will be somewhere at the front of the queue
ReplyDeleteInteresting topic...is there really a documented high rate of divorce in 2009 compared to say 1999? Anyway, very eager to hear your take as usual.
ReplyDeleteBetty, Boop, unfortunately I cannot give you scientific statistics. But many marriages are shaky in the teething years for both traditional reasons and the lure of money and flashy things that's been grabbing many Ghanaians for a decade or two now.
ReplyDeleteYes, Kwame, there has to be sex and money in there somewhere.
ReplyDeleteNot sure it is documented, Abena Serwaa. But I remember that in my first year as a lawyer (2003) senior lawyers told me about how the number of people consulting lawyers on the possibility of getting a divorce was steadily rising (especially among those who were not married for more than a few years).
ReplyDeleteWell, Myne, I could never make such a certain statement.
ReplyDeletehey :) asem beba debi
ReplyDeletei agree with u kwame. modernity has alot to do with it but i would put pretence at da front of da queue. people are just not real any more. dere's alot of xpectation 'n den disappointment ...
