On Closing Car Doors

Mother courtesy-trained you to hold a door by the handle, and shut it with good grace. That is how Breeding shuts the door. Many dumbly decided that Mother meant a door to, or in, a house. So, when they evacuate a car, they grasp the portal by the flank or edge, and fling it to a vulgar close. I really hate that.

  1. My Cornell roommate is in the habit of hard banging my car door and when I complain he retorts by saying that's what he does to his Beama. My simply response, well, this is not your Beama, its my Rogue. It really sets me on edge.

  2. Oh, me too. But I've caught myself doing it absent mindedly while never really intending to. Sometimes the weight of a car door differs and I expect it to me much heavier than it really is.

  4. I have to bang MY car door Nana Yaw, and because of that I find myself doing that to other people's as well. Will have to remember is a sign of breeding - or lack of it :-)

On this note or car door etiquette, I am also curious, if as a man you open the car door for a lady and she is seated inside, do you expect her to reach over and open your door before you get around to the driver's side? Have been told that that is a sign of good breeding too.

  8. Ada, I agree. The weight of the car might be a plausible reason for shutting the door hard. It still does not explain not shutting it with the handle.

  9. Yes Esi, but if the old car has a handle, you shut it by the handle.

  10. Oh Denise, hope you're really smiling about the point about good breeding.

Yes, I was told some time ago about the woman's breeding showing through if she leans over to open the man's door. But nobody's ever opened it for me. And I do not expect it.

  14. A terrible habit to bang the door, Posekyere, but as important to me is that people must hold the handle and not the body of the door!

  17. Thinking about it, I realise it is difficult to slam a door when you are holding the handle. Maybe that's why the two go hand in hand.

I am guilty of slamming many a car door and not using the outside handle. I consider myself chastised and will do much better

  18. Well, then, Lucci, you know what to do. My major problem is not just the slamming, but shutting the door without using the handle!!!!!!!
